How many of us these days fail regularly to get a good night’s sleep?
The bad news is insomnia not only leaves us feeling lousy and can severely lower our quality of life, it has longer term negative implications on our health and wellbeing.
The good news is that research has shown massage therapy to be an effective tool to tackle the unwelcome night vigil.
Massage can tackle the main causes of insomnia – pain, stress, anxiety and depression, mainly through the release of a body chemical known as Seratonin.
Seratonin promotes better sleep by:
- inducing deep relaxation which primes the body for better sleep
- helping the body reset its internal sleep/wake cycle
Massage also reduces the stress hormone cortisol in the body which both depletes the body’s levels of serotonin and can keep the body over stimulated and primed for activity rather than relaxation.
In turn, as you sleep better, the body is able to reach the deeper phase of sleep during which the body really rests, restores and repairs itself, resulting in waking up feeling refreshed and raring to go!
